Director Transportation Safety
Job Location Des Moines, Iowa Req ID DIREC048818Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to direct reports, including, but not limited to, hiring, training and development
- Support a culture of safety throughout the organization by developing driver safety programs to ensure adherence to FMCSA regulations, accident prevention, safety campaigns, and driver and manager accountability
- Oversee and manage all aspects of DOT compliance, including driver qualification, inspection, and audits, ensuring that all drivers are following Federal Department of Transportation Compliance and training guidelines
- Analyze data from various platforms such as FMCSA, Lytx, and Tenstreet, identify trends, and provide recommendations for improving safety and regulatory procedures
- Manage the company’s DOT random drug and alcohol program
- Works closely with Driver Recruiting and is responsible for minimum safety-related hiring criteria associated with driver screening
- Review accident reports, conduct incident investigations, root-cause analysis, follow-up, and leverage learning across the organization
- Actively participates in committees and associations related to accidents, injury, and emergency response programs
- Manage Geo Tab data and use it for coaching, and evaluating driver safety performance while working collaboratively with operations
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
- Adheres to all company policies and procedures
Qualifications: Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Transportation/Logistics, Business, or related technical field, preferred
- Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP), preferred
Qualifications: Experience
- 10+ years of safety experience; transportation industry required (associate safety, distribution, logistics and DOT/OSHA regulatory compliance
- Class A CDL, tanker and hazmat endorsement (fully qualified status with Solar Transport) or related experience and knowledge – Preferred, not required
- Experience in training in the transportation industry preferred
- Regulatory knowledge or Driver Qualifications, Hazardous Material regulations, equipment requirements, or the ability to use PHMSA & FMCSA reference materials
